6 Ways to Stand Out as an Intern

Make-A-Wish Oklahoma, interns
When I started my copywriting internship at Make-A-Wish, I had no clue what I was getting myself into. I had never interned outside of school before, completed self-paced work projects, or been in a place with more than 20 employees. I felt utterly unfit for the office environment, even though I’d be doing something I loved.

3 Kids Who Wished For Winter

Avery, Make-A-Wish America, Central and Northern Florida, Julie Richards Photography
Many wish kids dream of going on warm summer vacations, but a select few break that mold. Instead of sunny days on the beach or rides in a theme park, they dream of penguins, snowmen and skiing. The restorative power of winter gives these wish kids a chance to recuperate, and the wishes become even more powerful when they allow kids to experience winter for the very first time.

Unusual Skills Lead to Fantastic Wishes

Madison, Make-A-Wish America, Emma-Louise
At first glance, it would seem that a professional sandcastle builder and a construction worker have little in common. Sure, they both build structures of sorts. But they work in completely different places, and their goals are entirely dissimilar in every possible way.

3 Everyday People Who Granted Extraordinary Wishes

Ethan, Sam, garbage man, Make-A-Wish America, XSight Media
Sam is an everyday man with an everyday name and an everyday job. He wakes up every morning, ready to clear the refuse from the streets of Sacramento, and he goes home every night knowing that, because of him, the city will be a little cleaner than before.

The Original Wish Mom

Linda Pauling, Chris Greicius, Make-A-Wish Arizona
Linda wears glasses, a green cap and a Make-A-Wish sweatshirt, a sort of casual-but-spirited look. Her grey hair peeks out from underneath her hat, and her blue eyes have a kindness behind them that is seldom matched.

Getting Your Kids Into Giving

Make-A-Wish, Tri-counties chapter, student volunteers
My heart melted the other day when my little cousin, Olivia, started a donation jar for Make-A-Wish. After watching a video about a young girl’s wish being granted, she was moved and ran to get her piggy bank right away. It was the very first time she had ever asked to donate her own money to a charitable cause.

Thinking of a Wish on Sisters Serve the World Day

Chi Omega, Katlyn Gould, Sisters Serve the World Day
When I was 14 years old, I was battling all the normal fears of being a freshman in high school: terrifying older students, big lockers and a huge school that I was bound to get lost in. But this was nothing compared to a greater battle I was fighting: stage three Hodgkin’s lymphoma, an aggressive form of cancer in the lymph nodes. Over the period of six months, I went through four rounds of rigorous chemotherapy and eight weeks of radiation treatment. Finally, on Nov. 22, 2007, I was declared in remission and am proud to say I am nine years cancer-free.

Military Personnel Help Wish Kids Fight Off Illness

Carl, WWII pilot, military, Make-A-Wish America
With options like amusement parks and trips abroad, it may be surprising that so many wish kids dream to be in the military for a day. Sometimes, they are inspired by a relative who serves or has served in the past, but that’s not always the case … so why does experiencing military service appeal to them?

4 Books That Explore Illness from a Sibling's Perspective

CC0 Public Domain
Siblings of kids with life-threatening illness are in a unique position. Even though they themselves may not be sick, they must adjust their lives to accommodate their brother or sister. They may have to handle challenges their peers do not face, like going on regular hospital and doctor visits, coping with medical emergencies or fearing for their sibling’s health.

Tips & Tricks to Make Halloween Fun for Everyone

pumpkin, jack-o-lantern, Halloween, 2016
I’ve always loved Halloween. It’s the one time of year you can be as weird as you want and be rewarded for it with candy. As an adult, I love it even more because, well, I can still be weird, but I also have so much fun handing out treats and interacting with the kids.
